This policy brief explores the impact of air pollution on health and address the air quality issue in the response to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). It also provides key actions that policy makers, NGOs and health professionals can take to ensure that every one can breathe clean air.
ACT Health Promotion launched the Civil Society NCD Status Report for Brazil on April 9th at the 4th Intersectorial Forum on the Fight Against NCDs organised by the Public Health Institute. The report was supported through NCD Alliance’s NCD Advocacy Institute Accelerator Programme and is intended to stimulate government and relevant stakeholder action on NCDs.

This report presents case studies of six countries in different regions of the world that have enacted policies to eliminate industrially-produced trans fatty acids/trans fat (TFA) from their food supply. The purpose of this report is to provide civil society organizations (CSOs) and policy-makers around the world with examples of successful strategies for enacting and implementing TFA policies. The report also provides best practices, lessons learned, and recommendations based on the experience of policy-makers, advocates, and researchers involved in such efforts.

Air pollution is the world’s largest single environmental health risk, and a leading risk factor for NCDs. According to the WHO, air pollution causes 7 million deaths every year worldwide. Of these deaths, about 80% are from NCDs, making the number of NCD deaths due to air pollution comparable to mortality due to tobacco use. Air pollution negatively affects quality of life for all, and in particular for billions of people living with NCDs.
